Transport & Travel

Here's how to get there folks - hopefully this will make the planning a bit easier. The where to stay section has all the accomodation details. xx

Plane: Nearest airport by far and away is Knock and you can hire a car from there from as little as 12 euro per day (less than a taxi fare!)

Google maps says it 135 miles from George Best Belfast City airport and takes 2hrs 51mins via the M1 motorway and A4 - it's the same distance more or less from Belfast International Airport.

The maps say it's 2hr 28 mins from Dublin airport via the N4.

The directions on the Castle website if you drive are:

Markree Castle is located just off the main Sligo to Dublin Road (the N4), near the village of Collooney.

At the Collooney Roundabout follow the R290 towards Dromahair. We are mile, at the top of the hill on the right.

This is the third exit at the roundabout if coming from the Dublin/Galway direction or the first exit coming from the Sligo/Donegal direction.

GPS co-ordinates: N54 10.456' W008 27.714'

We are going to write even more fail safe directions next time we're over starting from the airport but it really is a very easy drive - about 25 mins.

Bus: It's Ireland. In the winter. Don't be silly.

Tube: Picadilly line to Heathrow...

Train:Collooney has a station and allegedly the main Sligo to Dublin train stops at it but I'd be inclined to advise as per the bus here...

Taxi: Only local cab number we have at the moment is 00353 7191 30500 but he'll surely know more and from memory there were cabs at the airport though it's a pretty tiny airport so probably safest to have a cab waiting.

Found these guys- -offering online offer of 53 euro for taxi from airport to Markree which is pretty reasonable between 4 people (less than a tenner each). Just google Knock airport taxi and a few come up.
